Cirque de Salazie - November 2004

The Cirque de Salazie in the municipality of Salazie in the French overseas department of Réunion is the north-eastern Caldera des Piton des Neiges . The basin extends in north-south direction for about six kilometers and in east-west direction for about seven kilometers. The Cirque de Salazie receives significantly more rainfall than the other calderas on the island of Reunion and is therefore characterized by dense vegetation and numerous waterfalls. The basin is also dominated by the Piton d'Anchain (1356 m). It is believed that this mountain, rising steeply on all sides, was originally part of the Piton de Neige.

Since August 2010, in addition to the Cirque de Salazie, the Cirque de Mafate , the Cirque de Cilaos and the towering volcano Piton des Neiges, all of which are located in the Réunion National Park , under the title Pitons, cirques et remparts de l'île de La Réunion (Eng .: summit, basin and steep slopes of the island of Réunion) a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
