Civic Technology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Civic Technology stands for technical concepts (especially in the field of information technology ) that promote the commitment and participation of citizens. The focus areas are the creation of communication platforms, the improvement of public infrastructures and technology-centric improvements to the common good.

Civic Technology is developed by different companies, organizations and initiatives. A well-known example is the Code for America initiative (German counterpart: Code for Germany ), which is a non-profit organization that focuses on transparency and open data . “The program started in Germany in 2014 with the establishment of Open Knowledge Labs in 8 cities. The labs are regional groups of designers, developers, journalists and other interested parties who meet regularly to work on useful applications related to open data. "

The civic technology applications implemented to date are based on open administrative data such as financial data, environmental data, data on educational institutions and statistical data. Applications such as the Open Budget, a visualization tool for financial data, and council information systems are created from this data.
