The Clair – Fort Kent Bridge was a bridge between the United States and Canada over the Saint John River . The bridge connected the cities of Clair in New Brunswick on the Canadian side and Fort Kent in the US state of Maine .
use
The 222 meter long bridge was used for car traffic. The cross-border bridge was crossed by around 1,900 vehicles every day. On the Canadian side, the bridge was connected to Route 205 , on the US side to Route 161 and US Highway 1 .
history
The bridge, built between 1929 and 1930, was renovated in the 1990s. After cracks and other signs of wear and tear were found on the bridge in 2009, the Maine Department of Transportation imposed a ban on motor vehicles weighing 2.7 tons in January 2011. On January 28, 2011, the responsible authorities on the Canadian and US side published a plan to build a new bridge between Clair and Fort Kent and demolish the existing bridge. This new bridge was officially inaugurated on July 31, 2014. Demolition work on the Clair-Fort Kent Bridge began in September of that year.
