Clan Line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The British shipping company Clan Line existed from 1877 to 1988.

history

The shipping company was founded in Liverpool in 1877 as CW Cayzer & Company . The shipping company started a service between Great Britain and India. Captain William Irvine joined the company one year after it was founded, whereupon the shipping company renamed itself Cayzer, Irvine & Company . After an influential Glaswegian businessman joined the company in 1881, the shipping company founded the Clan Line Association of Steamers on Hope Street in Glasgow. With the new capital from Glasgow new steamers were built, which Cayzer, Irvine took over for the Clan Association. Cayzer remained the owner of the six existing ships.

The year 1890 brought another name change to Clan Line of Steamers Limited , in which Cayzer owned the majority of the shares. Four years later, the company acquired the Persian Gulf Steam Ship Company with four ships. A crossing from Liverpool to Madras or Calcutta at that time cost £ 45 in first and £ 30 in second class.

From 1907 the shipping company was renamed Cayzer, Irvine & Company, Limited . At the end of World War I , Cayzer, Irvine took over the Scottish Shire Line and the Houston Line along with the British and South American Steam Navigation Company , but all three retained their colors, flags and ship names.

In 1956 the clan merged with the Union-Castle Group , which together with the King Line and Bullard King & Company became British & Commonwealth Shipping Limited . In the period that followed, there was a lively exchange of ships within the group. Three years after the merger, in 1959, the Springbok Shipping Company was founded as a South African subsidiary. She took over a large number of the Clan ships and subsequently operated the services to South Africa. The shipping company Safmarine emerged from Springbok Shipping in 1961 . A year later, the South African whaling company Hector Whaling was taken over.

In 1980 Turnbull, Martin & Co. Ltd., the former operating company of the Scottish Shire Line, was initially incorporated into Cayzer, Irvine Shipping Ltd and, on October 20, 1986, once again into CI Shipping Ltd. Renamed, but dissolved on March 9, 1999. Cayzer, Irvine & Company Ltd became British & Commonwealth Group Management Ltd on November 5, 1987 . This was placed under forced administration on December 31, 1988 and also dissolved.
