history

Up until the 18th century, the printing machines at Oxford University Press (OUP) were in the basement of the Sheldonian Theater, where they could not be used during events. Due to the increasing demand, the university finally decided to build a new building especially for the OUP.

Nicholas Hawksmoor was hired as the architect, construction of the building began in 1711 and ended in 1715.

When the OUP moved into a new building on Walton Street in 1820 , the University used the Clarendon Building as an administrative building. In 1975 the building was handed over to the Bodleian Library, which it now also uses as an administration building.
