Claresse

Claresse is the brand name of a farmed fish from the Dutch company Claresse Visverwerking. It is a hybrid of the family of airbreathing catfish ( Heterobranchus longifilis x Clarias gariepinus ).

The species has eight barbels and a cylindrical body. Like many hybrids, Claresse cannot self-procreate. Breeding therefore takes place with the parent species.

Use and marketing

In 2006 Claresse was approved as a farmed fish by the Dutch authorities . Breeding criteria were the content of omega-3 fatty acids , the white firm meat and the possibility of producing boneless fillets. Claresse has a very mild to neutral taste. The slaughter weight is 1.0–1.2 kg. The fish is marketed in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and France. 5000–8000 t are produced annually.
