Clatskanie (people)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clatskanie , other spellings Klatskanie , Tlatskanie or Kwalhioqua-Tlastkanai were a tribe of North American indigenous people who lived on the banks of the Snake and Columbia Rivers in the north of what is now the state of Oregon in the northwestern United States . They are assigned to the Athabaskan language family and originally came from the Kwalhioqua people who settled on the south side of the Columbia River.

In November 1805 they were discovered by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their overland expedition. At the time the tribe had between 400 and 1200 members, the exact number is unknown. Around 1850, after being decimated by disease, wars, displacement and mixing with other tribes, there were only three male and five female tribesmen. The tribe is now considered extinct.
