Claudia Marcella the Elder
Claudia Marcella the Elder (Latin: Claudia Marcella Maior ) (* around 43 BC ) was a Roman noblewoman.
Life
Claudia Marcella Maior was the elder of the two daughters of Gaius Claudius Marcellus and Octavia Minor , the sister of the Emperor Augustus . To distinguish it from her younger sister, also named Claudia Marcella , her name is given the addition Maior (= the older one). The two sisters lived from 39 to 37 BC. With Octavia Minor and her new husband Marcus Antonius in Athens and returned 37 BC. Back to Rome with their mother, where they were strictly brought up by her.
Claudia Marcella Maior married around 28 BC. Augustus' friend Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and bore him several children, including Vipsania Marcella, who later became the wife of Publius Quinctilius Varus , and Vipsania, the wife of orator Quintus Haterius. 21 BC Augustus managed to divorce Claudia Marcella and Agrippa because he was supposed to marry Julia , the daughter of the emperor. Now Claudia Marcella entered a new marriage with Iullus Antonius , the younger son of the triumvir Marcus Antonius and his third wife Fulvia . From this second marriage Claudia Marcella had the son Lucius Antonius, who was praetor in AD 19 , and possibly another son Gaius Antonius and the daughter Iulla Antonia.
