Claudia Marcella the Younger
Claudia Marcella the Younger (Latin: Claudia Marcella Minor ) (* around 39 BC) was a Roman noblewoman.
Claudia Marcella Minor (= the younger) was given the nickname Minor in modern literature in order to be able to distinguish her from her older sister Claudia Marcella Maior of the same name . Both were daughters of Gaius Claudius Marcellus and Octavia Minor , sister of the emperor Augustus .
Claudia Marcella Minor, who was only born after the death of her father, may have first married an ignoramus; H. a stranger, a. Then she married Paullus Aemilius Lepidus , probably the suffect consul of the year 34 BC. BC, who was considerably older than her. She bore him Paullus Aemilius Regillus . After the death of her husband, she married the consul of the year 12 BC. BC, Marcus Valerius Messalla Appianus († 12 BC in office) and had the following children with him:
- Marcus Valerius Messala Barbatus , the father of Valeria Messalina , the third wife of Emperor Claudius .
- Claudia Pulchra , the 3rd wife of Publius Quinctilius Varus , the great loser of the Varus Battle .
Numerous inscriptions by Claudia Marcella's slaves and freedmen are preserved in a tomb near Rome.
