The company is mainly active in the USA and Canada and offers various services that focus on the disposal and processing of hazardous waste and decontamination . Customers are companies in general industry, metal production and processing companies, companies in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as refineries and public customers. Service Chemical LLC, a subsidiary of Clean Harbors, is active in the chemical distribution and sells cleaning agents and solvents from various manufacturers.

Clean Harbors was founded in 1980 by Alan S. McKim and started as a four-man operation for cleaning tanks. By taking over various companies in the field of environmental services, Clean Harbors grew over decades together with its service portfolio. In 2012, Clean Harbors took over Safety-Kleen, a waste oil processor with around 4,200 employees at the time of the takeover. In 2018 the US industrial cleaning business was acquired from Veolia .
