The Clorox Company is a United States homeware and chemical company headquartered in Oakland , California . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index.

The company is particularly known for the Clorox brand of bleach .

Company history

The company was founded on May 3, 1913 by Archibald Taft, Edward Hughes, Charles Husband, Rufus Myers and William Hussey. The company initially had the name Electro-Alkaline Company . In 1928 the company went public in San Francisco and changed the company name to Clorox Chemical Company .

In 1957 the company was bought by competitor Procter & Gamble . However, the purchase was banned by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), as the FTC feared a monopoly of Procter & Gamble in the United States homewares market. The FTC won this dispute and in 1969 Clorox became an independent company again.

In the 2016 fiscal year, which ended at Clorox on June 30, 2016, the company achieved sales of 5.76 billion. Clorox employs around 8,000 people.
