The Coast Guard Medal is a US military award that was introduced on August 4, 1949 on the basis of 14 USC Section 493. The award is presented to any member of the US Coast Guard who has distinguished themselves through heroism during their service. In order to receive such an award, the Coast Guard member must have performed an award-worthy act in the face of great personal danger or one that is well above normal expectations.

The order was first awarded in March 1958, when Sailor Earl H. Leyda and Petty officer third class Albert Raymond Johnson were presented with the award. They were awarded the medal for rescuing workers from a tunnel. The workers were trapped in a tunnel under Lake Ontario after an explosion .

The Coast Guard Medal corresponds to the Soldier's Medal , the Airman's Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal .
