The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is the third highest distinction awarded by the United States Department of the Navy . The medal can only be given to members of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps . The award has been conferred by a congressional resolution since August 7, 1942.
The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is awarded to soldiers who have shown courage and bravery outside of combat . The award is equivalent to the Soldier's Medal of the Army , the Airman's Medal of the Air Force, and the Coast Guard Medal of the Coast Guard .
