A suspected Native American culture in what is now the southwestern United States was called the Cochise culture around the middle of the 20th century . According to various ideas, it should have been in the Archaic period from around 5000 BC. Until 2000 BC BC or with a much earlier beginning up to 12,000 BC. BC, then also the Paleo-Indians be comprehensively settled. It was supposed to guide the change of the Indians of that area from hunters and gatherers to sedentary farmers by adopting arable crops like sunflowers , beans , corn and pumpkinsand cotton from Mexico . The Hohokam , Mogollon and Anasazi cultures should have developed from the Cochise culture .

The assignment of the archaeological finds from the period to a uniform culture and the term are considered obsolete and have not been used since the late 20th century.
