Code_Aster is a free FEM simulation software .

It was initially developed by Électricité de France (EDF) for internal use, but released in 1999 under the terms of the GPL . Largely unknown in the German-speaking area due to the initially purely French documentation, the software is enjoying increasing popularity in the francophone-speaking area and increasingly also in the Anglo-American area. An English-language documentation of the software has been officially available since September 2011. In direct comparisons within the scope of simulation projects on reactor safety , the software was at least on a par with commercial alternatives. It represents one of the core components of CAE Linux . Code_Aster was mainly used in the development of the ( EPR ). The source code currently comprises 1.2 million lines and is approved by the EDF Nuclear Structures Safety Authority. The documentation comprises 13,000 pages. 2,000 test examples are available which can be used to test the functionality of the program.

The software offers finite element analysis and numerical simulation for the calculation of mechanical and thermal, static and dynamic effects for solid and liquid substances. Acoustic and material-specific influences (e.g. fatigue, corrosion) can also be taken into account. There are interfaces to other programs, including, for example, Salome . The software can be used under Linux and various Unix derivatives, but there are also non-official ports for Windows, e.g. B. as an FEM extension to the gear program KissSoft (version 10.3) or as a commercial Windows version (11.x) from Alneos.
