Library catalogs

The beginning of the Breviarium librorum de coenobio sci Galli confessoris Christi

The codex contains two library catalogs from the St. Gallen Abbey Library. On page 4 the short catalog Libri scottice scripti and on pages 5 to 21 the catalog Breviarium librorum de coenobio sci Galli confessoris Christi .

The Libri scottice scripti can be traced back to the Irish foundation of the monastery and contain books in insular script . They come from the same author as the Breviarium librorum de coenobio sci Galli confessoris Christi .

The Breviarium librorum de coenobio sci Galli confessoris Christi is (together with the Libri scottice scripti ) the oldest book directory in the abbey library. It comes from an author in the middle of the 9th century, additions by three other writers were added in the 9th and then in the 10th century. The catalog lists around 450 individual volumes in the library in 25 departments and often also the works they contain. Many of the manuscripts are still in the condition described at the time. The catalogs do not contain any signatures . The catalog serves as proof of the existence of a St. Gallen monastery library in the 9th century.
