Codex Saurma

The Codex Saurma is a book of coats of arms from around 1600 and is one of the most important Silesian coats of arms collections.

It is believed that the collection in Breslau was made for someone from the aristocratic Keltsch von Riemberg family and only came into the possession of Hugo Freiherr Saurma von und zu der Jeltsch (1837-1896) in the late 1860s, who added it to the association in 1892 'Herold' in Berlin (former signature B 211, today's signature Ms. her. Fol. 4). Since then, the book of arms has been called Codex Saurma .

What remained were 352 sheets of paper with a size of 310 × 200 mm, bound together in a sheepskin cover. The first part is said to have been created around 1590. It shows the imperial eagle , the coats of arms of the electors, the archbishops, some grand masters as well as some abbots, archdukes, imperial counts and barons. The title page of the second part shows a knight with the coat of arms of the Keltsch von Riemberg. This is followed by around 2460 coats of arms, all of which are labeled with their first and last names, most of which belong to the Silesian knighthood and were probably created between 1590 and 1620. The parts have a separate pagination (119–227 and 2–264). The existing name index only refers to the second part.

The artistic quality of the coat of arms drawings is rather poor. The importance is mainly due to the naming of first and last names in the personal assignment of the coat of arms, whereby several family members are often shown with the different coat of arms variants. Therefore, the Codex Saurma is an unsurpassable source for noble namesake and their unadulterated coats of arms for the 16th century. In addition, the Codex was an important template for the first edition of the Old Sieve Maker, which is why the Silesians make up the largest contingent in it with 27 tablets.
