Coelbren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coelbren (also Coelbren y Beirdd) are a neo-pagan fortune-telling practice that goes back to the work of the Welsh poet Iolo Morganwg ( Edward Williams ). According to Morganwg, the Coelbren were the old Celtic script of the bards , but today it is certain that it is a pure invention of Morganwg.

Some Celtic-neo-pagan groups, especially the modern druids , adapted Morganwg's system as an oracle stick and magical system.

The Coelbren alphabet originally consisted of only 10 characters, but was gradually increased to 24 letters. Similar to the Germanic runic alphabet (which Morganwg served as a model) there are only three lines from which each letter can be formed.

A related neo-pagan invention is the so-called "Welsche Bardenalphabet".
