Col de Tende road tunnel
The Col-de-Tende road tunnel is a 3182 meter long road tunnel under the Colle di Tenda on the border between France and Italy .
The Col-de-Tende road tunnel was inaugurated in 1882 and was at the time one of the longest road tunnels in the world and the first road tunnel under an Alpine pass. Until 1964 it was the longest road tunnel in the Alps. The European route 74 leads through the tunnel .
Due to its narrow profile, two-way traffic is only possible for cars and motorcycles. The truck traffic was regulated by a traffic light control in one-way traffic. In the meantime, the tunnel is operated in one-way traffic every half hour.
A 8099 m long railway tunnel of the Tendabahn runs parallel below the road tunnel .
Construction of a second tube
A second tunnel tube has been built parallel to the west since 2014 for a budget of € 176 million. The completion of the new tube was initially planned for February 2020; As of June 2020, however, the work is still ongoing.
It should later take up all traffic to France; The traffic towards Italy is to be routed through the existing tube. The new tube should be 9 m wide, have a base width of 6.5 m with a 3.5 m wide lane and a 2.7 m wide emergency lane, and be connected to the existing tube by a safety tunnel.
However, it will only be possible to use both tubes in parallel at a later date, since after the opening of the second tube, the old tube will first be renovated and adapted to new safety standards.
