Colobopsis explodens is a species of ants discoveredin Brunei on the island of Borneo . Laciny & Zettel are the first to describe the species.
particularities
Colobopsis explodens is able to secrete a poisonous secretion . According to researcher Alice Laciny from the Natural History Museum Vienna, the poisonous secretion is released by the ants compressing themselves so hard that the resulting pressure causes the inner wall of their abdomen to "explode". This phenomenon was first described by Lanciny in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys . Enemy species can thus be repulsed or even shot from a distance. Like bees, the ants themselves die in the altruistic process.
