Color Lines (also called Lines ) is a computer game that was launched in 1992 by the Russian publisher Gamos ( Russian Геймос ). The idea, design and programming of the game come from Oleg Demin. Igor Ivkin and Gennady Denisov were responsible for the graphics. In early versions of Color Lines, a certain Olga Demina was named as the author; But this is only a code name for the author Oleg Demin, who was employed in the Moscow city administration at the time and - so the story goes - was not allowed to pursue any secondary occupation and therefore disguised himself with this name.

Gameplay

The game consists of a playing field with 9 × 9 squares and is played with balls (or balls) in seven different colors. At the start, five balls are randomly distributed on the playing field; after each turn three more.

The player's task is to assemble balls of the same color into horizontal, vertical or diagonal rows of at least five balls. A sphere is selected by clicking on it and moved there by clicking on an empty square. However, there must be a path of empty fields between the selected sphere and the destination.

If the player has formed a row of at least five balls of the same color, they disappear and the player receives points for them. A row of five balls is worth 10 points, six balls are worth 12, seven are 18, eight are 28 and nine are 42 points. He can also move another ball without distributing three new balls in the field. The game ends when all the squares are filled with balls.

The aim of the game is to get more points than the “king”; the king is a figure on a column to the left of the playing field, which shows either the maximum number of points achieved so far or the starting number 100. If the “challenger” has more points than the king, he overthrows it and becomes king in the next round.

Lines for Windows (1995)

In 1995 the first version for Windows was developed as shareware by Igor Nedelko and Andrej Akselrod for AbrewSoft. It was a faithful replica of Color Lines, with 256-color graphics and the usual buttons for all functions.

The figures on the pillars, champion and challenger, are still there, but have been moved from their medieval outfit to that of the modern office world. The figure on the right was a little animated, blinking and tapping her hand every now and then.

Later implementations

The gameplay of Color Lines was implemented over time in a large number of clones under different names. Implementations in Adobe Flash and JavaScript for web browsers are particularly popular ; But there are also numerous transmissions for PCs , notebooks , tablet computers , handhelds and mobile phones with any type of operating system.
