Gunnar's son

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gunnar Sohn (* 1961 in Berlin ) is a German business journalist .

origin

Son's grandparents Frieda and Wilhelm Sohn moved to Kuschkow / Spreewald in 1932 and bought a guest house and farm there. His father's school days began here in 1935. Since his grandfather was Jewish, the son family was forced to sell the business through boycotts. In 1936 the son family moved to Austria and opened a hotel guesthouse on the Danielsberg in Carinthia - the Herkuleshof. At the beginning of 1939 - shortly after the annexation of Austria - the hotel was taken away from the Sohn family by means of the so-called Aryanization and a Carinthian woman was appointed as the owner. The grandfather was sent to the Dachau concentration camp - later to the “ Jacoby'sche Heil- und Pflegeanstalt ” near Koblenz. He died there under unexplained circumstances shortly before his deportation to Auschwitz on May 23, 1942. His grandfather Wilhelm Alfons Israel's son was named in the death certificate - “without a job, Israelite”. The great-uncle Franz's son was able to move to London and survived. In 1939 the grandmother and his father were expelled from the “Ostmark” to the “Altreich”. They moved to Berlin. His father attended the 6th elementary school in Berlin-Mitte. Since he was a mixed breed 1st degree according to the race law , he was not allowed to attend a higher educational institution. In November 1943 both were bombed out and moved in with their maternal grandparents in Eggersdorf. His father wanted to start a career as a mechanical engineer here, but was not allowed to take up his apprenticeship in Müncheberg at the Paul Sellin company, as the race law forbade taking up a craft profession.

He was then assigned an apprenticeship as an agricultural apprentice with the farmer Kurt Ehlert in Grünberg / Neumark. When the Russians marched there in January 1945, his father was taken to Landsberg as a prisoner, but came back to Berlin in July 1945. He first worked in an electrical works in Köpenick until he suffered a tram accident on September 25, 1945. The result was a stiff leg. After his recovery and a long stay in Sweden , his father became a ticket issuer at the BVG on April 22, 1947 . Here he later succeeded, with great effort, in a career in administration as a dispatcher - until his retirement, which he could only enjoy for barely a year. He died after an accident in August 1990.
