The Colt ACR ( A dvanced C ombat R IFLE) was an American assault rifle of Colt Defense LLC . It was developed in the 1980s on the basis of the Colt Automatic Rifle at the request of the US Army as part of the Special Purpose Individual Weapon program. It was designed for use with duplex cartridges .
Overview
Basically, the Colt ACR is a modified M16 that is equipped with a reflex sight .
ammunition
The rifle fires duplex bullets made of tungsten carbide , from which the developers expected an increased hit rate.
It is a single case that contains two cartridges one behind the other. The Olin Corporation manufactures different variants for testing purposes, each of which includes two 27 grain (1.75 g) 0.158-inch (4 mm) projectiles and two 0.224-inch (5.69 mm) projectiles, one of which is 35 grains, ( 2.27 g) and the other was 33 grains (2.14 g).
Outcome of the project
Since the Colt ACR (just like the other rifles in the competition) could not meet the required increase in combat value of 100% compared to the M16 , it failed the tender. One of the main criticisms was the lack of accuracy.
