Columbia was a poetic name for the United States or North America that originated in the 18th century and gradually fell out of use in the 20th century. The District of Columbia and British Columbia still bear this name today . The name is derived from Christopher Columbus .

Columbia was also a female national personification of the United States, comparable to the male Uncle Sam , the British Britannia , the French Marianne , the German Germania , the Austrian Austria , the Italian Turrita Italia or the Swiss Helvetia . She is often featured in early 20th century political caricature and is still a trademark of Columbia Pictures today .
