CompactPCI is a 1997 Called into life standard of the PICMG for high-end systems in 19-inch technology with passive backplane for high standards of performance, robustness and reliability . The resulting PXI standard is largely compatible with the CompactPCI standard.

The connection to the backplane is made via five-row gas-tight and shielded plugs. CompactPCI backplanes can contain up to eight slots, of which the so-called system slot is intended for the host CPU card with the bus arbiter. The number of cards can be further increased with a PCI-to-PCI bridge.

The electrical specifications are based on the PCI standard (Peripheral Component Interconnect), but are partially restricted by e.g. B. all PCI signals may only be loaded with one load unit (except for the system slot). The supply voltage is 5 V, 3.3 V, +12 V and −12 V. A locking mechanism prevents cards with 3.3 V technology from being inserted into 5 V slots or vice versa.

CompactPCI is colloquially abbreviated as “cPCI” or “CPCI”. The PICMG has distanced itself from these designations. They are officially no longer used.
