history

The company was founded in 1956 in Münster under the name Holländisch-Deutsche Düngemittel-Gesellschaft Todenhagen & Sprenger KG by consul EH Sprenger and was the first manufacturer to offer ready-made potting soil under the brand name Compo Sana. In 1959 the company moved to today's factory premises in Münster-Handorf and has been using the Compo-Primel as a trademark since 1964. Since the 1960s, advertising campaigns in the print and TV sectors have been known throughout Germany.

In 1967 the then Salzdetfurth AG (predecessor of today's K + S ) took over 50% of the company shares; This is how the cooperation with the "Salzdetfurth sales office GmbH" began with the establishment of the "Salzdetfurth COMPO-Werk GmbH & Co. KG" in Handorf, in which Salzdetfurth and EH Sprenger were equally involved. In 1971, Wintershall acquired the 50 percent stake in "Salzdetfurth COMPO-Werk GmbH & Co. KG" from company founder EH Sprenger. In the same year, Salzdetfurth concentrated its own specialty fertilizer division at Compo; Among other things, this led to Compo also selling the special and liquid fertilizers from Chemische Fabrik Kalk in Cologne (CFK) from 1971 and thus entering the professional market.

When Salzdetfurth was renamed in 1972, the 50 percent Salzdetfurth stake in Compo went to Kali und Salz. Kali, Salz and Wintershall each held 50% of Compo. In 1976, Wintershall ceded its 50% Compo shares to its main shareholder BASF , which then took over Compo completely in 1986 as part of its diversification strategy at the time.

In 1999, K + S bought back Compo for DM 420 million from BASF, which now concentrated on its core business in chemistry. As of July 1, 2009, K + S merged the business activities of its subsidiary Fertiva and parts of the Compo professional business in the company K + S Nitrogen. At the beginning of March 2011 Compo was sold to the private equity investor Triton for 205 million euros . In 2016 Compo was taken over by the Kingenta Ecological Engineering Group (China).
