Concejal

A Concejal (plural: Concejales) is the member of a Concejos (or Consejo), a council (lat. Concilium = council, meeting) in the political administration of Spanish-speaking countries. It corresponds roughly to the German municipal council .

Spain

In Article 140 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Spain of 1978, the term Concejal is used in the sense of a councilor. It says there that the municipal councils ( Ayuntamientos ) are composed of the mayors ( Alcaldes ) and the council members ( Concejales ). They are responsible for the government and administration of the municipality. The community council members (Concejales) are elected by the citizens of their community in a general, equal, free, direct and secret ballot. The mayors are elected by the council members.

Latin America

In many Latin American countries, the municipal councils are called Consejo Municipal . The Concejales are usually elected for a period of four years. Re-election is possible in some countries, e.g. B. Colombia or Venezuela , not allowed.
