The Condor A580 was a motorcycle made by the Swiss manufacturer Condor-Werke AG in Courfaivre . Condor built small numbers of single-cylinder motorcycles for the Swiss Army . During the Second World War , Edgar Fricker developed the A580 for the army and the C580 as a civilian version in 1944/45. The A 580 had a two-cylinder boxer engine with side-controlled valves and a cardan drive . Mag motors were built into older military machines, they wanted to become independent, everything was to be manufactured by a Swiss company. So Condor developed a military motorcycle based on the German model, easy to maintain, robust and ideally suited for the mountainous terrain of Switzerland. The engine is side-controlled, not exactly optimal for maximum performance, at that time overhead valves were actually controlled by rocker arms and push rods state of the art. However, this version turned out to be very robust and, in conjunction with the hydraulic valve lifters, very low-maintenance.

technology

The frame consists of two pipe loops that connect to a pipe in the area of the tank. The telescopic front fork of the Mecascopic type is undamped, and a straight travel suspension was installed on the rear wheel. The first models still had a rigid frame and a parallelogram fork . The front aluminum brake drum with a diameter of 270 mm is mounted on the right between the wheel and fork and screwed to the wheel with three bolts. The ring gear of the cardan drive is fastened in the brake drum of the same size on the rear wheel, which is mounted on the left, and is also fastened to the rear wheel with three bolts as a combined brake and drive unit. The wheels are interchangeable and have quick-release axles . The tires are 3.25 × 19.

engine

The two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine has a 70 mm bore and 75.2 mm stroke and a displacement of 577 cm³. The output is 20 hp at 4400 rpm. The engine is side-controlled with hydraulic valve lifters . The engine is lubricated by a gear pump, the ignition is carried out by a Scintilla battery ignition. The carburetor, an OBA type 30, is arranged together with a wet air filter under a housing cover above the gearbox. Due to the upright valves, the cylinders are shorter than in the BMW boxer engines, so this engine is narrower and ensures a greater lean angle. The exhaust system consists of one pipe per cylinder that is led to a silencer box next to the rear wheel. From there, the exhaust gases enter the open air through a thin pipe. The four-speed gearbox with dog clutch is equipped with a countershaft for off-road driving so that the driver has eight gears available. The clutch is a single-plate dry clutch .
