The Confederazione italiana sindacati lavoratori (CISL) is an Italian trade union confederation . It was created in 1948, when the CGIL, which was founded in 1944 as a unified union of communists, socialists and Christian democrats, approached the Italian Communist Party . The Christian Democrats separated from the CGIL and, with the CISL, founded their own trade union federation with a clear Christian orientation in accordance with Catholic social teaching , although it was declared to remain confessionally and politically independent.
With 4.5 million members, the CISL is one of the three largest trade union confederations. It is represented in all areas of the economy, but with a focus on the public sector .
The CISL is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 4,507,346 (as of November 2017).
The SGB / CISL (South Tyrolean Trade Union Federation) is the bilingual South Tyrolean branch of the CISL.
