Conformal fuel tank
Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFT) are additional tanks for aircraft whose shape is directly adapted to the contour of the aircraft. They serve to increase the range and flight time of an aircraft and are used exclusively in military aircraft. In contrast to drop tanks, conformal fuel tanks have the advantage of more favorable aerodynamics . In addition, they increase the radar cross-section and the moment of inertia significantly less than the alternatives at the external load stations . In addition, the external load stations are still available for other payloads such as weapons or electronic containers. The disadvantage is that conformal fuel tanks cannot be dropped in flight. The additional air resistance and the additional mass therefore exist during the entire flight and thus have a negative effect on some of the flight performance (e.g. agility, thrust-to-weight ratio ). On the other hand, CFTs can be removed from the floor.
Aircraft types with conformal fuel tanks
The following aircraft are (partly optional) equipped with conformal fuel tanks:
- McDonnell Douglas F-15
- General Dynamics F-16
- McDonnell Douglas F / A-18 (in preparation)
- BAE Hawk
- Dassault Rafale
- Northrop F-5
- Eurofighter (in development)
