Connection broker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In addition to the actual virtualization infrastructure, an additional intermediary component plays an important role in the provision of virtual desktops (VDI) : the connection broker . It coordinates the distribution of remote user access to the correct virtual machines (VMs) and, if necessary, triggers the provision and start of new VMs as well as the shutdown of unused VMs. If several servers are combined into a farm for such a VDI platform, the connection broker can also distribute the load based on the available resources.

For example, VMware's Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM), Systancia AppliDis Fusion, Citrix 'XEN Desktop or Quests vWorkspace take on this function as a central access point and, depending on the product, offer not only load balancing and provisioning, but also additional functions such as secure access via SSL and extended functionalities of the transmission protocol used or the integration of non-virtual environments.
