Consolidated Canal (Arizona)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Consolidated Canal is a canal in Maricopa County in the US state of Arizona , it is located in the southeastern metropolitan area of the city of Phoenix, Arizona .

The Western Canal collects some streams that originally ended in the Salt River and diverts this water in a northerly direction. The canal network, originally built as an irrigation canal system for agricultural purposes, branches south of the city of Mesa : a western branch remains as the western canal , the eastern branch forms the approximately 12 km long Consolidated Canal , smaller irrigation canals derived from it were sacrificed for road and settlement development.

The Consolidated Canal runs in a wide arc through the city of Mesa and is divided at a weir north of the city center (near East Brown Road ). The western part (on Google Maps) is still called Consolidated for a few blocks , but on the county map it is called Tempe Canal , and this branch is called Western Canal again to the south . The branch flowing to the north combines all irrigation canals coming from the southeast ( Southern Canal , Roosevelt Canal and Eastern Canal ) and flows into the Salt River.

The Consolidated Canal was built in 1891 by Dr. AJ Chandler and his combined Canal Company. Because the canal was built during one of the driest periods in the Salt River's history , its owners faced supply problems. The deepest point is 7 meters. Negotiations to buy the combined canal began in 1907. It was sold to the government in November 1908 for $ 187,000. Flood events occurred almost every year as a result of heavy rainfall and the low gradient in the neighboring districts.
