Constellation Records (American label)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Constellation Records was an American music label from the 1960s.

Constellation Records was founded in August 1963 by Bill Sheppard , Ewart Abner and Art Sheridan in Chicago. Abner had previously been fired as head of Vee-Jay Records ; Art Sheridan owned the Chance Records label in the early 1950s . Constellation had its offices at 1421 South Michigan Avenue and published rhythm and blues and gospel music. The label was a sub-company of Dart Record Sales Corporation , which Abner founded in 1962. The short-lived label released recordings by Gene Chandler , Lee Dorsey , Wilbert Harrison , The Freedoms , Bobby Miller , Dee Clark , Holy Maxwell , Nolan Chance and Clara Ward , as well as re-releases on the Chance label's LP, such as The Moonglows .

In late 1965, Abner again entered into a business relationship with the Brackens, the owners of Vee-Jay; In 1966, Constellation's activities ended . Abner moved to Detroit's Motown Records ; Sheppard then founded his own label Bunky Records .

The label is neither to be confused with the Canadian label Constellation Records nor with the label of the same name by Dick Griffey, which existed in the 1980s.
