Container logistics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Container Logistics all processes of management of containers considered. In addition to container transport, this also includes storage processes in containers, global tracking of containers by means of their clear identification, the provision of empty containers, their maintenance, inspection and repair.

“The enormous investments in containerization have paid off. The growth in container traffic is still continuing. Perhaps no longer unchecked, but still until the relocation of conventional transports to the container within their volume and weight limits is complete. "

- Captain AG Winfried Strauch, container handbook

ISO containers are a standardized part of global supply chains. In order for this to function smoothly, the right container must be available in sufficient numbers in the right quality on time. That is the classic logistical task.

Labelling

Due to the worldwide container transports , clear labeling is necessary in order to identify each container at all risk passages.

An example from Hapag-Lloyd AG

1. Owner key: three capital letters from A to Z given by the International Container Bureau BIC (Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal) at 14, Rue Jean Rey, 75015 Paris.

2. Category number: (product group key) fourth digit of the container number, the letters U (standard container) or J (removable container for special freight) or Z (trailer and chassis). The International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport (Brussels) assigns the categories A, B, C, D and K.

3. Serial number: six digits set by the owner of the container.

4. Check digit: a number that is calculated from the operator code, category number and serial number. The ISO-6346 defines the algorithm. This enables the validity of a container code to be checked.

service

Containers can be cleaned on the outside in just a few minutes using special washing machines that are similar to a car wash. Steel parts that are not galvanized must be protected against corrosion by painting.

High overloads usually only lead to elastic deformation. If, however, a spot has been dented by excessive local force, it can be bulged. If it tears, it can be repaired after cutting out the damaged piece and welding in a new sheet steel surface.
