Ground segment

The ground segment or control segment , often abbreviated as G / S (Ground segment) , is a term from satellite communication that includes all components that are installed on the ground for the purpose of satellite communication. These include a. the ground stations with their connections to other ground stations as well as the gateway stations for connection to mobile networks and fixed networks.

Monitoring the GPS satellites

Monitoring (Engl. Monitoring ) of the GPS satellites is carried out by

  • 6 control stations of the US Air Force and
  • 11 civil organizations including
    • 6 stations operated by the National Geospatial Agency and
    • 5 from the National Geodetic Survey

The main task of the stations is the tracking (continuous tracking) of all visible satellites, u. a. through distance measurements , the transmission of data ( synchronization of time and orbit data) and system commands to the satellites. The Master Control Station (MCS), the main control station, is located in Colorado Springs , with a second, alternative station at Vandenberg Air Force Base , California.
