Convención Nacional de Trabajadores

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Convención Nacional de los Trabajadores (CNT) was a central union in Uruguay .

Its beginnings date from the meeting of the same name in May 1964, in which the Central de Trabajadores del Uruguay (CTU) affiliated unions and the non-organized unions took part. In October 1966, the CTU dissolved, with its members being incorporated into the CNT, as part of the Congreso de Unificación Sindical .

After the two-week general strike in Uruguay in response to the military coup of June 27, 1973 , persecution of the leadership of this organization began. In the course of this, on June 30, 1973, the CNT was banned by the civil-military dictatorship (1973–1985).

In 1982 the PIT (Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores) began to reorganize the trade union association, until the PIT-CNT ( Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores - Convención Nacional de Trabajadores ) emerged as the successor organization of the CNT on May 1, 1984 .
