The Cordillera de Apaneca ( English Apaneca Range ) is a group of stratovolcanoes in the west of El Salvador between the Santa Ana volcanic complex and the border with Guatemala . The highest point of the chain is the 2,381 meter high stratovolcano Santa Ana .
At the east end of the chain is the stratovolcano Cerro los Naranjos (1,969 m), at the west end is the stratovolcano Las Ninfas with a crater lake about 500 by 300 meters . Also at the western end of the volcanic chain is the 5 × 3.5 kilometer caldera Ataco . On the northern flank there are numerous fumarole fields and a geothermal power plant that has been supplying energy since 1975. In October 1990, 26 people were killed in a hydrothermal explosion in the Agua Shuca thermal area .
