Santa Ana ( Spanish : volcán Santa Ana ) or Ilamatepec is a volcano in the Santa Ana Department , El Salvador .
General information
The Ilamatepec is part of the Apaneca mountain range and is located in a tropical, humid mountain forest and in areas with coffee plantations. The volcano is located about 65 kilometers west of the capital. Around 10,000 people live in the vicinity of the volcano. The region lives mainly from agriculture and tourism.
At 2,381 meters above sea level, the volcano is the highest mountain of fire in the country. Three more craters have formed inside the main crater over time.
Previous eruptions
Eruptions of the volcano are recorded from the years 1520, 1521, 1524, 1570, 1576, 1621, 1722, 1734, 1874, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1904 and 1920.
Recent outbreaks
After a long rest, the volcano erupted again on October 1, 2005. A cloud of smoke more than 10,000 meters high stood over the crater rim of the volcano. It hurled out liquid magma , large rocks and ash . Boiling water emerged from the volcanic slopes. Already in the middle of September 2005 warnings were given about another outbreak after the seismic activity had increased noticeably. Two people were killed in the eruption and thousands of residents had to flee. Rocks are reported to have been thrown up to 1.5 kilometers.
