Cornelius Severus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cornelius Severus was an epic Roman poet in the Augustan era. He was friends with Ovid , among others .

16 fragments of Cornelius Severus have survived today. His friend Ovid ascribed to him the " Poem about the Kings " (Letters from Exile, 4,16,9), which was possibly the first part of a longer chronicle called " Res Romanae ". Seneca the Elder quoted 25 verses about the death of Cicero in his work suasoriae (6.26) , which may also have come from this work. Quintilian praises a poem about the Sicilian War and Seneca the Younger (Letters 79.6) refers to a description of Mount Etna . Both possibly came from " Res Romanae ".
