from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dexter and Newport Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded on March 30, 1853 and built a 15 mile line that branched off at Newport Junction from the main line of the Maine Central Railroad (MEC) and led to Dexter . Like the adjoining main line, the Dexter line was built with a gauge of 1676 mm and was retrained to standard gauge together with the main line in 1871.

When the company opened on December 1, 1868, MEC initially leased the company for 30 years. The contract was extended to 999 years on November 25, 1888. It was not until December 27, 1939 that the MEC finally acquired the small railway company. Since 1889 there has been a connection to Dover-Foxcroft in Dexter , which was built by the Dexter and Piscataquis Railroad . The line is closed today and was last used by Guilford Transportation .
