The Cornwallis Island ( English Cornwallis Island , sometimes also called Michailoff's Island ) is a small sub-Antarctic island that belongs to the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is about 1.5 km long and is 9.4 km east of Cape Valentine , Elephant Island . In between is the Prince Charles Strait . The island got its name in 1821 shortly after the discovery of the South Shetland Islands. It is named after the British admiral Sir William Cornwallis .
