The Prince Charles Strait is a 8 km wide strait in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It separates Cornwallis Island from Elephant Island .
This passage has been known to seal hunters since at least 1821. The Porpoise made its first certified passage in 1893 during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of the American polar explorer Charles Wilkes . Deep soundings were carried out by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in December 1948 on board the ships John Biscoe and Sparrow . Namesake is the English heir to the throne Charles, Prince of Wales (* 1948).
