Correspondence of the Associatio Perseverantiae Sacerdotalis

The correspondence of the Associatio Perseverantiae Sacerdotalis was the means of communication of a priestly prayer association founded in Vienna in 1868 .

The club's journal spread to more than 200 dioceses. The edition can be derived from the number of association members: in 1892 there were 7,644, in 1918 24,091 priests in 233 dioceses belonged to it. The magazine was also read overseas where some members served as missionaries. The members were both religious and secular priests. The editorial seat of the magazine was the Vienna seminary .

The editions of the first decades were structured according to the following sections: 1. Editorials and asceticism, 2. Announcements, 3. Biographical matters, 4. Pastoral matters, 5. Apologetic matters, 6. Pastoral cases and rubricistic matters , 7. Necrologists and finally 8. Association news.

Although the great majority of the articles were written anonymously, it is clear from the magazine that the articles were mostly written by members of the association, so the self-image of the Austrian clergy is clearly expressed through the periodical. Contributions by the future Archbishop Franz Jachym , the Klosterneuburg canon and publisher Pius Parsch , the Steyler missionary and writer Albert Schulte , the cathedral pastor and preacher Karl Dorr , the later Bishop of Graz-Seckau Josef Schoiswohl and others are included in the booklet.

Supplementary volumes appeared regularly in order to convey longer articles to the readership. They were mostly short biographies of exemplary priests, but could also be designed as handouts for pastoral purposes.

In view of their statements on the priestly culture of life and the history of theology and piety, the correspondence of the Associatio perseverantiae sacerdotalis is a valuable source. Last but not least, the obituaries for deceased members in almost every issue contain biographical information about priests, which was otherwise rarely recorded.
