Cosmology @ Home is a BOINC- based computing project created by the Institutes of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

aims

Cosmology @ Home compares theoretical models of the universe with the measured data and looks for the model that best fits the data.

Results from Cosmology @ Home can help to design future cosmological observations and experiments and to prepare the analysis of future data sets (for example from the Planck space telescope ).

astrophysics

The models generated by Cosmology @ Home can be compared to measurements of the rate of expansion of the universe from the Hubble Space Telescope as well as fluctuations in cosmic background radiation measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe .

Milestones

  • June 30, 2007: Project starts for non-public alpha test
  • August 23, 2007: Project opens approval for public alpha test
  • November 5, 2007: The project enters the beta test phase
