Coulommiers (cheese)

Coulommiers

Coulommiers is a French soft cheese with white mold made from cow's milk . It is similar to Brie or Camembert and has 45 to 50 percent fat in the dry matter. It is named after the place Coulommiers , where it was originally made.

The small cheese, with an average weight of around 350 grams, is largely produced in factories in the Île-de-France and Champagne-Ardenne regions . It matures within a month from a mild, slightly mushroom aroma and fine-nutty taste to a strong to racy and spicy smell and taste. The initially pure white mold lawn turns increasingly reddish brown. The best coulommier comes on the market between spring and late autumn. Because there is no binding law that regulates the production, the Coulommiers did not receive the status of a protected designation of origin.

The cheese tastes good straight with a few (red) grapes and can be used like Brie. Red wine, for example Côtes du Rhône , is recommended as an accompanying drink .
