Countrywide Financial Corporation was the largest mortgage company in the United States. The company's headquarters were in Calabasas in the US state of California .
It was founded in 1969 by Angelo Mozilo and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange NYSE under the symbol CFC and represented in the S&P 500 stock index .
Due to the real estate crisis in the United States, Countrywide Financial was sold to the US company Bank of America on July 1, 2008 by means of a share swap . The company was renamed America Home Loans in 2009 .
On Thursday, June 4, 2009, the US Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC) filed a lawsuit against founder Angelo Mozilo and Chief Financial Officer Eric Sieracki and David Sambol, who are responsible for the operational management of Countrywide. The three former managers are accused of insider trading .
