Covent Garden (London Underground)
Covent Garden is an underground station on the London Underground located near the Covent Garden shopping district in the City of Westminster . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 and is served by the Piccadilly Line . In 2013, 21.17 million passengers used the station.
architecture
Designed by architect Leslie Green , the station was opened on April 11, 1907 by what was then the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (predecessor of the Piccadilly Line). It is one of the few in central London whose platforms can only be reached by elevators or steep stairs. The facility is overcrowded, especially on Saturday afternoons when there are more people than usual in the neighboring shopping district. At times, there was a rule that on Saturday afternoons you could only get on, but not get on. Transport for London announced that it would build a second exit in the near future. Because of the terrorist attacks on July 7, 2005 the station was closed for a few weeks, on August 4, 2005 it reopened.
Position in the route plan
Covent Garden is 260 meters or 20 seconds' drive from Leicester Square Station. This is the shortest distance between two stations in the entire underground network. The walk between the two stations is shorter than taking the subway. Nevertheless, the future of Covent Garden station is assured, as otherwise Leicester Square station would reach its capacity limits, especially on weekends.
