The medieval monastery bridge

Coverham Abbey was a Premonstratensian settlement near Leyburn ( North Yorkshire ) in Great Britain . The ruined monastery is classified as a Grade I cultural monument .

history

The Premonstratensians first followed a call from Helewisia, daughter of Ranulf de Glanville , to Swainby, where they settled in 1190. This may have been a filation from Durford Abbey in Sussex . The Premonstratensians were brought to Coverham around 1212 by Helewisia's son Ranulf fitzRalph. In Swainby there is no evidence of the first settlement today. A new monastery complex was built in Coverham, the church of which bore the patronage of St. Mary of Charity. After attacks by the Scots in 1331/32, the church had to be restored. The abolition of the monastery took place in 1536. Church and monastery buildings were partially demolished or integrated into an 18th century manor. Only a few fragments are evidence of the former monastery church. Above all, the gate and guest house of the monastery have been preserved.

In the southwest corner of the former monastery grounds is the medieval Coverham Abbey Bridge over the River Cover. The bridge was built by the monastery in the 15th century and led to grangia and possessions of the convent. The bridge is classified as a Grade II * cultural monument .

Immediately to the west of the former monastery grounds, the parish church of Holy Trinity from the 13th century has been preserved, which was probably incorporated into the monastery.

useful information

The ruins of Coverham Abbey have been selected several times by the BBC as the location for filming the television series “ The Doctor and the Dear Cattle ”, for example in the episodes “Pride of Possession” and “The Call of the Wild”. The bridge was the location of the episode "Advice & Consent".
