Remains of Cowthally Castle

Cowthally Castle , also Couthalley Castle , is a ruined castle near the village of Carnwath in the Scottish county of Lanarkshire (now the administrative division of South Lanarkshire ). The remains of the L-shaped tower block are a Scheduled Monument and Historic Scotland has listed them as a Category B Historic Building.

The castle appears to have been built in the 12th century and was rebuilt in 1375. In 1317 the property fell to Sir John Somerville, 4th Baron of Linton, through his marriage to Lady Elizabeth Douglas . In 1415 the castle was changed and expanded again and then again in 1524. In 1557 Cowthally Castle was besieged and partially destroyed; It was rebuilt in 1586.

The castle buildings, which survived in the 17th century, were described by James Somerville, 11th Lord Somerville , in his family history, The Memorie of the Somervilles .
