Craig House (Angus)

Craig House , also House of the Craigs , is a mansion near the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The former archway, which marked the entrance to the outer courtyard, is classified separately as a Category A building.

The mansion was built in 1637 on the site of the 16th century fortification Craig Castle. The foundation of Craig Castle as well as some fragments have been incorporated into the structure of Craig House. In the course of the 19th century the structure was redesigned.

Craig House is about 1.5 km southwest of Montrose near the south bank of the Montrose Basin . The two-story building has an L-shaped floor plan. It occupies the north and west sides of the former Craig Castle, which enclosed a courtyard. The year of construction is stored on a plate above the entrance door on the east facade of the west wing.

The archway preserved as fragments of the external fortifications is located south of the manor house. It dates from the 16th century. Its masonry consists of quarry stone with natural stone details . The arch has a battlements reinforced with battlements. Fragments of round defense towers flank the gate.
